Eric Johnson is an American guitarist from Austin, Texas primary known for his instrumental guitar work but has been known to sing and play piano. Eric Johnson began playing guitar at age 11 and counts Eric Clapton, Wes Montgomery, Jimi Hendix and Chet Atkins among his influences.

Eric Johnson was primarily known in the guitar world as a great player but he had limited commercial success early in his career. Eric Johnson began to break out of the Austin music scene first with his instrumental track “Zap” that was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental in 1987. However it was “Cliffs of Dover” that won the 1991 Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance.

Eric Johnson is closely associated with Fender Stratocaster guitars and has his own signature model from Fender. Johnson is also known for playing a Gibson ES-335 as well. Martin Guitars also makes a signature Eric Johnson model called the MC-40. For amplification Johnson mainly uses Fender, Marshall and Dublin amplifiers.
