Description: Mississippi John Hurt EDIT

Mississippi John Hurt (1893-1966) was an acoustic blues singer and guitar player. He was a master of finger-picking with an alternating bass line.

His first recording was published by Okeh Records in 1928 but was a commercial failure and the company went out of business the following year in the Great Depression. Hurt returned to Washington DC in 1963 to start performing again for larger audiences. He had some commercial success before he died in 1966.

Hurt played a variety of inexpensive homemade guitars until the 1960’s. Then, he played a Gibson J-45, a Guild F30 and a 1930 Martin OM-45.
