Junior Kimbrough…Heard of ‘Em?
I hadn’t either until I was doing a bit of research for that last post on Dan Auerbach’s gear. Turns out Junior Kimbrough was a big influence on Dan and after a listen to Junior’s work, you can definitely hear the similarities.
Junior’s music is often described as modal and hypnotic, with tricky syncopation between his thumb playing the bass notes and his fingers on the melody notes. Junior has recorded with Charlie Feathers, another Mississippi musician that counts Junior as an influence.
His music has to be heard to describe it. If you dig The Black Keys, you’ll definitely appreciate Junior Kimbrough. After the jump you’ll find a widget with 30 second clips of some of Junior’s work, hopefully giving you an idea of the sound.
Btw you can *buy* these DRM-free MP3s from Amazon and import them very easily into your iTunes or music player of choice.
