Fretbase Faceoff: EHX Holy Grail Plus vs. Malekko Spring Chicken
All right Fretbasers here’s a match up that will have reverberations throughout the world! We all wish we had a nice spring reverb built right into our amp or maybe even a sweet standalone Fender ‘63 Reverb unit. But sometimes the only option is adding a pedal to our board or into our effects loop. So today we’ve picked a classic, well known reverb pedal - the EHX Holy Grail Plus and pitted it against the new comer - the Malekko Spring Chicken.
Check out the demos and let us know which reverb pedal you think is the winner. Full story…
The Electro-Harmonix Holy Grail Plus is an upgraded version of the original Holy Grail released in 2002. It’s a digital reverb pedal that offers a “Blend” for adjusting the wet/dry mix and an “Amount” knob controls the decay and damping of the reverb. The Holy Grail Plus also offers four reverb types - “Hall” for a large open space reverb, “Room” for a smaller space, “Spring” that simulates the classic spring reverb and “Flerb” which incorporates a flanger into the mix to create some really spacey sounds. The EHX Holy Grail Plus offers a lot of reverb options and even the ability to take your sound into outer space.
The Malekko Spring Chicken is a brand new pedal developed by the folks at Malekko Heavy Industry Corporation. It’s a deceptively simple pedal with just one knob call “Cluck” that controls the amount of reverb that’s added to your signal. Keep the knob at 9 o’clock for just a slight “Room” reverb mix or roll it up past 12 o’clock and you’re in Dick Dale heaven. Video courtesy of ProGuitarShop.com.
Special prize goes to the first pedal snob to tell us we’re comparing apples to oranges and that these pedals are too different for a comparison.

Personally I like the Spring Chicken. So much in fact that my wallet is starting to get pissed.
I have to say I like the simplicity of the Spring Chicken, I’m not sure how often I would be changing my reverb settings in a live situation, however the EHX sounds fantastic.

[...] checking out the Malekko Sping Chicken last week, we also stumbled upon another Malekko gem - the Barker ASSMASTER. That’s right - [...]
Well alright! Spring Chicken gets my vote but, as a surf instro fan, I may be a bit single minded. There is only _one_ reverb sound I prefer — though to a greater or lesser degree depending on the tune. It would have been helpful to’ve heard some more ’surfy’ playing, esp. with palm muting to see how well it ‘drips’.
You’re comparing apples and oranges.
And we have a winner!! Thanks for playing Tom Campbell
