Steve Earle Covers Townes Van Zandt on New Album “Townes”

Monday, May 11th, 2009

Townes Van Zandt is one of those artists that Texas singer-songwriters and acoustic guitar players love to love.  He wrote Pancho and Lefty – which ended up being a huge hit for Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard.  He was a good friend of Guy Clark – who performed a Townes song on all of his albums.  Lyle Lovett sang Townes’ song Flyin’ Shoes at his funeral and covered four of his songs on his Step Inside This House album.  So it is no surprise that yet another of the great singer-songwriters would release an album of Townes Van Zandt songs.  And as of today, that album can be had for a steal.

Metallica on Discovery’s Time Warp (video)

Monday, May 11th, 2009

A couple of weeks back Metallica was featured on the super-slow motion TV show Time Warp.  Time Warp is on the Discovery Channel and features MIT scientist and teacher Jeff Lieberman — along with digital-imaging expert Matt Kearney — using super slow motion cameras to “bring truly never-before-seen wonders into a form that your body can actually process”.

In the Metallica episode they featured each of the band members doing what they do best but slowed down into super slow motion.   Check out some of the clips…

Everyone seemed to like the Downturn Guitar: Win a Guitar Giveaway post we did a while back and who can blame them?  Who doesn’t like a free guitar? So we’re back at it again with another list of guitar giveaways.

Well we’ve sent out a crack team of interweb editors to find some of the current guitar giveaways going on right now.  If they’ve missed any, let me know so I can add it to the list.   Check out the list…

Beatles Rock Band – The Controllers

Friday, May 8th, 2009

Back in March we mentioned that Rock Band was coming out with a Beatles version and pondered which of the Beatles famous guitars would be included in the upcoming package.  Well Joe Bosso over at MusicRadar has done some digging and found out that we’ll be treated to John Lennon’s Rickenbacker 325 and George Harrison’s Gretsch Duo Jet.

Check out some of the pics of the guitars.  They look better than some of the crappy real guitars we’ve owned.  Full story…

Guitar iPhone App: iStroboSoft

Thursday, May 7th, 2009

We had the opportunity to get to test out another iPhone app geared for guitar players.  The iStroboSoft from Peterson Tuners is a visual tuner that features their classic “rolling LEDs” that slow and stop as you get closer to being in tune.  It’s a great feature that’s become a distinguishing feature on Peterson Tuners and makes tuning a simple visual process.

The iStroboSoft (opens iTunes) is the best iPhone guitar tuner we’ve see to date.  The iStroboSoft provides the best tuning accuracy we’ve seen and comes with a couple extra features that really make this app stand out among guitar tuners on the iPhone.  Highly recommended iPhone app.  Full story…

Recording King Announces New Resonator

Thursday, May 7th, 2009

Recording King has announced a new resonator guitar to their line up – the Recording King Professional Resonator RR-60-VS.  Resonators are fantastic guitars for achieving that traditional bluegrass and blues slide guitar sound.  They get their distinctive sound from metal cone instead of a wooden soundboard and were originally designed to be louder than conventional acoustics to allow the player to cut through the sound of the band.

Recording King’s new Professional Resonator is a well-built guitar that uses high quality parts to achieve a great tone.  Full story…

Coolest Fuzz Pedal Ever?

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

While checking out the Malekko Sping Chicken last week, we also stumbled upon another Malekko gem – the Barker ASSMASTER.  That’s right – “assmaster”.  The name alone implies just how much “ass” is mastered when this pedal is kicked on.  Inspired by the original Maestro Bass Brassmaster octave pedal this pedal provides some of the coolest fuzz sounds we’ve heard yet.

Definitely worth checking out.  Full story…

Review: Anvil! The Story of Anvil

Tuesday, May 5th, 2009

Yesterday I had the pleasure of going to see the rockumentary Anvil! The Story of Anvil.  It’s the story of the Canadian heavy metal band Anvil that achieved some limited success during the 1980′s hair metal days and has managed to keep the band going through thick and thin (mostly thin) as the two founding members, Steve “Lips” Kudlow and Robb Reiner, have tried to make a living with the band.

The film is for anyone interested in seeing a real-life Spinal Tap story, albeit with even less success than the fictitious Tap seemed to have achieved.  Anvil! The Story of Anvil is ultimately about redemption but at times feels like you’re watching a train wreck of aging rockers that really need to move on with their lives.   Full story…

George Harrison’s 12 String Rickenbacker 360

Sunday, May 3rd, 2009

When Brian and I started Fretbase, we were especially interested in the gear that was used by our favorite guitarists. But some days we feel like we could just focus on how The Beatles got the great sound they did. Because, let’s face it, there is just nothing like them. So we were pretty excited when the folks at Gibson Lifestyle wrote such a great article about the Rickenbacker 360/12 played by George Harrison. That’s right, a great article by the people at Gibson that isn’t about a Gibson.  Full story…
