United Breaks Guitars (Video)

Saturday, October 31st, 2009

broken-guitarOr at least that’s what musician David Carroll says.  Last summer Carroll was flying on United with his band Sons of Maxwell for a 1-week tour.  One of the other passengers noticed that the baggage handlers were being a little rough on the guitars.  In her words, “My god they’re throwing guitars out there.”

Sure enough, when Carroll arrived in Nebraska his $3,500 Taylor 710 had $1,200 worth of damage.  Despite the fact that United Airlines admitted that the incident occurred, they would not reimburse Carroll for his loss.  Most of us would have given up or written a letter.  Not David Carroll.  He went more than one step further.

Taylor Guitars Releases Taylor Swift Baby Taylor (TSBT)

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

taylor-swift-baby-taylor-1We’re not always fans of signature models.  They are often higher priced variations of traditional guitars with a higher price tag to go along with that celebrity endorsement.  Not so with the Taylor Swift Baby Taylor which was just released by Taylor Guitars.  The Taylor Swift Baby Taylor is much like a Taylor’s exceptional 3/4 size travel guitar - the Baby Taylor - but with a unique rosette that includes the word “love” inscribed three times and the name of Swift’s latest album “Fearless.”

In the official announcement of the guitar, Swift described how her love of her Baby Taylor inspired the release of the TSBT.  Swift recalls of her early days of touring, “I used to sit in the back seat of the rental car while I was on my radio tour at 16, writing songs on my Baby Taylor guitar.”  According to Taylor, “I love the sound, and I love those memories.”

Fender Telecaster Deluxe Black Dove Reviews

Monday, October 26th, 2009

fenderredcl-460-80We’ve found a nice review of the Fender Classic Telecaster Deluxe Black Dove over at MusicRadar.com and we thought we’d share it.  We love guitar reviews - especially ones with sound clips.  We also really like the idea of P90s in a Telecaster guitar.

We did a little more searching around and found a nice video from Andy at ProGuitarShop.com giving a nice video demonstration.  If you’re in the market for a very versatile guitar that will work for anything from country to indie-rock to classic rock, the Fender Telecaster Deluxe Black Dove just might be the one for you.

iPhone Guitar App: RIFF (w/ video)

Saturday, October 24th, 2009

riff_appWe just had to share the RIFF iPhone guitar app with our readers.  It has a demo video that will absolutely leave you smiling when you watch.  The folks at MasterMedia Productions have put together an iPhone app that will let you play lead guitar over included jam-along tracks or any song from your music library.

But the really cool feature is creating bends and vibratos.   You create bends by sliding your finger along the app or vibrators by shaking your finger on button.  Check it out!  We’ve even added it our Fretbase-approved list of guitar iPhone apps.

Fretbase Launches Tweetmixx Channel

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

tweetmixx-logoWhen the good folks at Mixx offered to let us be part of their launch of TweetMixx Channels, well we just couldn’t resist.  First and foremost, we love the product.  Tweetmixx Channels allows you to use the power of Twitter to create content for your own webpage.  It also lets you choose a select group of insiders who can be followed right from your own pages using Twitter.

What makes Tweetmixx unique is that it does a lot of things that can’t be done using regular Twitter interfaces - our twitter stream is hosted on our pages and the links are “unwrapped” so that you can see what you are clicking on before you click on it. In short, TweetMixx lets us create a social media hub for Fretbase and highlights other important sources of information for guitar players.  And we can even include all of this functionality in a widget that you can put on your own site.

Pickups For Acoustic Guitars

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

acoustic guitar performance by music bandEditor’s Note: The following is a guest post from Anton Emery from RhythmStrummer.com a website that offers guitar lessons.  Anton offers us the following lesson on acoustic guitar picksups.  Enjoy!

Pickup technology for acoustic guitar has come along way in the past twenty years.  Previously a performer just stuck a mic in front of his guitar and hoped for the best. Now you can take a recording of your actual guitar, load that into a digital effects system, and create an amplified tone based on that acoustic recording. And that is just one of the many options.

Download Lyle Lovett’s New Album Natural Forces For $8.99

Monday, October 19th, 2009

natural-focesIt’s only 9:30 p.m. here in California on the day before its official release and you can already download a pre-release of Lyle Lovett’s new album “Natural Forces” from Amazon for only $3.99 $8.99.  The legendary Texas singer-songwriter’s new album is already getting rave reviews.  According to the Dallas Morning News, “there’s plenty to love” on the album.  And the BBC says Natural Forces is a “treat from start to finish.”

After playing and re-playing the album for the last couple of hours, I have to agree.  Lyle combines his own songs with those of some other great songwriters to turn out quite a gem on Natural Forces.  His excellent playing of his Collings Guitars doesn’t hurt either.  Two early favorites are the title track and Lyle’s version of Shawn Colvin’s “Don’t You Think I Feel it Too.”  Now I’ll admit that we’re big fans of Lyle Lovett over here, but for the price of two grande lattes (or even at full price) you really have to enjoy this one.  Read on for song clips.
