ray-lamontagne-with-elvis-costelloSome days it feels like the world is giving you lemons.  But today, it feels like the world gave me lemonade.  On Wednesday, January 13th, Elvis Costello will welcome Lyle Lovett, John Prine and Ray LaMontagne on this show Spectacle:  Elvis Costello with… (yes, this could be the worst name ever for a show, but who cares when the musicians are this good?).  The show promises an exploration of the role of the Singer/Songwriter.  And who better than these three?

Sunday, December 27th, 2009

guitar-tab-on-apple-tabletBrian and I get more excited about the Apple Tablet with each advancing day.  And it isn’t just because of the possibility of of watching t.v. and reading the New York Times on the device.  There are plenty of devices out there that would let us do that right now.  What we’re really excited about is the potential to finally have a solution for keeping all of our guitar tablature handy.  Last year, we wrote an article describing our hope that the Amazon Kindle would be the solution.  But it wasn’t.  Read on to see why not and why we think the Apple Tablet will be different.

Ben Agosto: Olympian and Guitar Player (with Video)

Monday, December 21st, 2009

ben-agosto-and-guitarWhile most of us would love to be Eric Clapton or The Edge - playing guitar for a living - the truth is that most of us need to have day jobs.  Plenty of guitarists are teachers, doctors, lawyers and yes, even accountants.  In short, when you play guitar that is often the most exciting thing you get to do.  Unless you are also an Olympic athlete.  And that is where Ben Agosto comes in.

Review: The Guitar Hanger

Monday, December 21st, 2009

guitarhangerWhen we first posted on the Guitar Hanger earlier this year we thought it was a handy way to save some space and at the same time have easy access to your axe when the inspiration hits.  We’ve had a closer a look at the Guitar Hanger and had a chance to try it out in our own closet with our own guitars.

Wired Reviews The Gibson Dusk Tiger

Friday, December 18th, 2009

gibson-dusk-tigerTechie magazine and blog Wired has posted a review of the Gibson Dusk Tiger guitar.  They gave the guitar a 7 out of 10, praising the extensive amount of customization in an easy-to-use knob and software combo, while still maintaining the classic Gibson, analog signal.  Wired panned the “cheesy looks and weird finish” and described the guitar’s name as “Ron Burgundy-esque”.  They’re right, the name does conjure up thoughts of Sex Panther.

Schecter Releases New Damien Elite Electrics

Friday, December 18th, 2009

large-damien_elite_groupSchecter, metal fan favorite, has released a new set of Damien Elite electric guitars that come in 6-string, 7-string and 8-string models.  Yes, that’s right. An 8-string metal guitar.  Awesome.  While it’s not the first 8-string guitar (not even the first from Schecter), it is pretty cool to see a guitar like this for MSRP $869 USD.  Street price should put that guitar in the mid-$600’s - definitely affordable for the aspiring metal gods out there.

Review: TrueFire’s 335 Blues with Larry Carlton

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

335_boxsetTruefire’s master class “335 Blues” is Larry Carlton’s first instructional DVD in twenty years.  But don’t let that gap make you think Mr. 335 instructional ability is rusty or lacking.  I’ve been disappointed before with instructional DVDs before and found they can sometimes be difficult to use and tab booklets that were inaccurate compared to what the musician was playing.  Not true with Truefire.
