Bedroom Rockstar: The Beatles Rocky Raccoon (Video)

Sunday, February 28th, 2010

roryki-rocky-raccoonIt has been a little while since we have had a new Bedroom Rockstar on Fretbase and we have decided it’s time.  Since it has been a little while, I’ll remind you of the qualifications.  A Bedroom Rockstar is a non-professional that turns on a video camera (preferably while seated on their bed), takes a classic song and broadcasts a version of that song where the bedroom rockstar really makes that song their own.  A great example is  these two guys playing Pearl Jam’s Elderly Woman Behind The Counter in a Small Town.  But we have a new one we’re really taken with a remarkable version of the song Rocky Raccoon by The Beatles.

Quick One: Heavy Metal + Prop Comedy = Metallagher

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

gallaghershoesWe all know and love Metallica.  Power chords, double-bass drums and swinging hair.  And we all love Gallagher.  Smashing watermelons, giant couches and newsboy caps.  So what’s not to love about a mashup of the two, Metallagher?

That’s right folks we finally have a heavy metal band (albeit a cover band) that has infused it’s stage performance with prop comedy.  You know Carrot Top is feeling validated right about now.

Check out the thrashing, smashing watermelon video!

Look Ma, No Guitar!

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

Ok this one is a trip…

This guy uses just his voice and a microphone to create a lead guitar sound.   I’d say his vocal chords sound like a Stratocaster with humbuckers through a Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier and a TS808 screamer.  He trades a few licks back and forth with a real guitar players.   We’re not sure what his name but if you do please let us know in the comments.  Special hat tip to GuitarKadia for this one.  Check it out…

Jimmy Page Rules Out Led Zeppelin Guitar Hero

Friday, July 24th, 2009

jimmy-pageIn demonstrating proof that some great legends never sell out, Jimmy Page has ruled out the possibility of a “Guitar Hero: Led Zeppelin”.  After bands like The Beatles, Metallica and Aerosmith made their likeness and songs available to the makers of Guitar Hero and Rock Band, Jimmy Page has stood firm in his belief that Led Zeppelin would not translate well to video game format.

Just don’t tell him that we’ve all spent countless times in our bedrooms, guitar in hand and Led Zep blasting over the stereo, pretending we were on stage with Led Zeppelin…

Zivix “Headliner” Might Save An Entire Generation

Zivix's Headliner Guitar

I’ve always argued that Guitar Hero is a tragic diversion for potential musicians who will never learn how to play an actual guitar.  Worse, anyone playing Guitar Hero is not even responsible for making the music; they can only “hit” or “miss” the notes already laid out for them. The only way to remove a person any further from the process would be to handcuff them to a chair and blast an iPod Shuffle from across the room.

But Zivix’s Headliner electric guitar has just given me a glimmer of hope…

Is Guitar Hero the Real School of Rock?

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

We have never understood why anybody (even a child) would pick up a guitar that looks like it was made by Fisher Price rather than a real one.  But they do.  In 2007, Guitar Hero III (the latest incarnation) generated over $1 billion in sales.  And that is just Guitar Hero, we’re not even talking about Rock Band and its own monster sales.  While to some (i.e., us Fretbasers) this might sound like gloom and doom for the creation of new music, a correspondent for The Atlantic doesn’t think so.  Read on to find out why not.

M. Ward Releases New Album “Hold Time”

Tuesday, February 17th, 2009

This is how Jim James of My Morning Jacket describes the singer-songwriter M. Ward:  “His music is eternal and people will be listening to it as long as they have ears.”  James is right.  We hope we have our ears for a long time and we expect to be listening to M. Ward throughout.  In a recent article, The New York Times described his new album “Hold Time” as “indie folk with some pop glimmer and more country pluck.”  All we know is we like his sound.  We also like that he’s a guy who prefers his retro stuff.  Full Story…

Gibson Introduces “The Kristofferson”

Monday, February 2nd, 2009

Long before Kris Kristofferson was a successful movie actor, he was a tremendous songwriter who wrote classic songs not only for himself but also for others.  In addition to Janis Joplin’s big hit with Kristofferson’s “Me and Bobby McGee,” Kristofferson also wrote songs for Johnny Cash and many others.  In honor of Kristofferson, Gibson Guitars has just released “The Kristofferson SJ.”  In addition its great name, the guitar was intended to be similar to Kristofferson’s original Gibson Southern Jumbo.  Full Story…
