We just launched reviews on Fretbase last year and we have been amazed by the response. In under a year we have received hundreds of in-depth guitar and gear reviews and the quality of the reviews at times exceeds what we see from professional editors.
So we have decided that when we get a great user review we are going to highlight it in our news stream. Today’s user review comes from “OreoB”. OreoB provides a 5-star review for the Martin D-28 Marquis. After going into a lot of detail about the neck shape, bracing and even lamenting about the pricing, OreoB gives the Martin D-28 Marquis a 5-star review and claims that the guitar “is a player’s guitar for sure!”

Gibson’s latest artist model is the new “Slash Appetite For Destruction” Les Paul. The new guitar pays homage to one of the most important hard rock albums of the 1980’s and the guitarist that gave us some of the coolest riffs we’ve ever heard.

Admittedly, Alvarez Guitars gets short shrift here at Fretbase. Neither Brian nor I play an Alvarez guitar and unlike a lot of other guitar manufacturers, we don’t hear much directly from Alvarez. But what we do hear is good. By many accounts, the 45-year old company makes very good instruments at a reasonable price. Alvarez Guitars recently released the Alvarez RD4102C and at its price point, we really like what we see.

GearPipe is holding their first ever exclusive gear giveaway (congrats!) and up for grabs is a set of Fervor Handwound Strat pickups. These pups feature sand-cast Alnico rod magnets similar to those found in 1950’s Strats, high-quality copper wire and nickel-plated eyelets. The outputs are rated at 5.8K for the neck, 5.6K for the middle and the bridge is wound to a hot 6.4K. This set of pups would normally set you back $225.

We were pretty excited earlier this year when Martin Guitar introduced the new Martin 000-15M all-solid mahogany acoustic guitar. Not only were we excited about the ability to get an all mahogany guitar again from Martin, but we were also impressed with all of the new appointments. But when we hear about a new guitar, the first thing we want to see is pictures. Martin posted a few on their site, but that wasn’t enough. We wanted more. And sometimes the answers to your dreams come from far away places.

Here’s a couple of videos of Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck from the Madison Square Garden show in New York City on Feb 18th, 2010. Jeff Beck took the stage first and performed a set that featured songs off his upcoming April album. Clapton then followed with his own set that started off acoustic and then went electric and featured his classics. At the end of the show both players got on stage together to play. One song featured was Henry Mancini’s “Moon River”. Here’s a video of the band working on Moon River at sound check.

Here’s a quick one from Monte Montgomery playing his ode to his guitar called “Six String Wooden Friend”. We wanted to share it since we’re all so passionate about our guitars and we can all probably related to what Monte is singing about. Not to mention he has a kick-ass solo at the end of the video. Check it out.

Here’s a cool article from MusicRadar about Dave Grohl and Josh Homme on how they approach guitar playing. We thought it was particularly interesting to hear how Grohl thinks about the guitar.

We noticed recently that guitarist Eric Clapton has announced the date and lineup of this year’s Crossroads Festival. It’s going to be in Chicago on June 26th and it’s unlikely we’ll be able to make the trip out there. Which then had us asking what other guitar related festivals are going down this year? We’ve done a little poking around and here’s a few we’ve found that might be in your neck of the woods. (more…)

Like a lot of people, we were pretty disappointed last year when Martin Guitar stopped manufacturing the Martin 000-15s as a standard model. The all-mahogany (or sometimes sapele) slothead was a beauty that harkens back to an earlier time. Sure, we weren’t crazy about the tuning pegs or the decal rosette but for an all-mahogany (and sometimes sapele) small-bodied guitar from Martin, what could you expect for $1,249 street price? Yes, you can expect even more. (more…)
