Thursday, March 11th, 2010

dark-side-of-the-moon_dark_sidePink Floyd and EMI have been locked in a legal battle over the digital sales of the Floyd’s catalog on services like iTunes.  Pink Floyd has argued their contract, signed before the era of digital downloads, requires the band’s approval to sell individual tracks.  At stake is £10M ($15M USD) in unpaid royalties.

Johnny Cash and His Martin Dreadnought Still Coming Out With New Material

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

johnny-cash-american-vi-aint-no-graveWe are unabashed fans of Johnny Cash’s American Recordings.  The five albums that Johnny Cash recorded with Rick Rubin (and the 5 disc boxed set created in addition to that material) are considered by many to be the best recordings of Cash’s career.  While the albums had some original material, it was Cash’s covers of some all time classic recordings that really got our attention.  In particular, we love Cash’s versions of Neil Diamond’s Solitary Man and U2’s One. Read on for soundclips.

A Quick One: Ry Cooder

Monday, November 30th, 2009

ry_cooder_48f72bc01e767Ry Cooder has been dominating my iPod lately.   It all got started when I was listening to Sister Morphine off the Rolling Stone’s album Sticky Fingers.  Ry Cooder provided slide work on both Sticky Fingers as well as Let It Bleed.  Next thing I know I’ve got Ry Cooder’s Into The Purple Valley and The Ry Cooder Anthology in heavy rotation on all commutes and outings.

To share in the love here’s a quick video to whet your appetite for the guy Rolling Stone magazine ranked #8 in the “The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time” playing Dark End of the Street.

A Quick One: Adrian Legg

2970122Here’s a great video we stumbled across that features UK guitarist Adrian Legg.  Legg has been described as “impossible to categorize” and has become well known for his acoustic fingerstyle abilities, alternate tunings and strange looking guitars.  Like us, Adrian Legg is a bit of a gear nut and over the years has been involved in the development of Ovation, Vox and Takamine guitars.

In this short video clip we see him demonstrate a song using just an alternate tuning and the guitar’s tuners.  Short, but very impressive…

Free Streaming Single from Mark Knopfler’s Upcoming Album “Get Lucky”

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009

mark-knopfler-get-luckyWe started to like Mark Knopfler when when we first discovered him as the lead guitarist of Dire Straits.   The songs Sultans of Swing and Romeo and Juliet are some of our favorites of all-time.  But we really went crazy for Mark Knopfler after hearing his solo work - especially Sailing to Philadelphia (it doesn’t get much better than hearing Mark Knopfler join forces with James Taylor on the title track).  So needless to say, when Knopfler prepares a new release, we get pretty excited.

On September 15th, Mark Knopfler will be releasing his latest album Get Lucky.  Thanks to Knopfler’s promotion people we’re able to offer this link to the new track Cleaning My Gun from the upcoming release.  The whole album won’t be out for almost two weeks, but in the meantime it is great to get some new Mark Knopfler to sink our teeth into.
