We were pretty excited earlier this year when Martin Guitar introduced the new Martin 000-15M all-solid mahogany acoustic guitar. Not only were we excited about the ability to get an all mahogany guitar again from Martin, but we were also impressed with all of the new appointments. But when we hear about a new guitar, the first thing we want to see is pictures. Martin posted a few on their site, but that wasn’t enough. We wanted more. And sometimes the answers to your dreams come from far away places.

We wrote earlier this month about the rumor that Recording King would be partnering with Eric Schoenberg on some new acoustics - and it turns out our source was in the know. This week Recording King announced the release of the Recording King RP1-626 and the Recording King RP2-626 - a single 0 parlor size cutaway and a 00-size with a cutaway body respectively. Both guitars are intended to provide players with an even frequency response, clarity and a winder neck with a cutaway providing good access to the upper frets.

Sometimes something old seems like something new. At the Winter NAMM Show last week, Martin Guitar announced the release of 13 new guitars this winter. This year, we’d say the company had two primary areas of focus. The first is electrics. Even though Martin is known for their acoustic guitars, 8 out of the 13 guitars released were acoustic-electric models with built-in electronics. But we were most happy to see the two new M-models released - the Martin 000-15M and the Martin D-15M.

We have been fans of Recording King guitars since playing the beautiful and reasonably priced Recording King ROS-626 in 2008. We have been huge fans of Eric Schoenberg since about the same time since we were in Schoenberg’s store when we played it.
So you can imagine our excitement when we learned from a very reliable source that Recording King and Eric Schoenberg have been working together to develop a new guitar that will be launched at the Winter NAMM Show this week.

Inspired in part by Michelle Obama’s gift earlier this year of a Gibson Hummingbird acoustic guitar to Carla Bruni-Sarkozi, the New York Times has an article today suggesting classic guitars as a good item to buy or give as a gift this holiday season (we should all have friends or family like this). While the first lady gave Bruni-Sarkozy a new model Hummingbird, the article suggests that an original model from the 1960’s might have been a better choice.
According to a guitar-maker quoted in the story, “A Hummingbird from the 1960s would cost in the region of $6,000, about twice as much as the new model. They are both great guitars, but for the extra money you get a level of craftsmanship in the vintage version that has been lost.” Then, the author turns his attention to the guitar that continues to be far and away the most sought after vintage guitar.

Some guitarists pick a brand of guitar and stick to it. Think of Johnny Cash and Neil Young and their Martin Guitars or Bruce Springsteen and his Fenders and Takamines. But there has always been something different about Dave Matthews and it extends to the way he moves between manufacturers of guitars.
In a 1999 interview with Acoustic Guitar Magazine, Matthews said his main axe while on tour with Tim Reynolds was a Martin HD-28. In fact, at one point Martin even released a Dave Matthews signature guitar. But now it appears something has happened.

The Martin M-36 represents an interesting variation for Martin Guitars. The guitar is an “M” sized guitar. For some reason (readers, help me out), “M” sized guitars are are the fourth in line when you go from smallest to largest from 0, 00, 000 and then M. The size is good for players who want to get the volume of a larger guitar but not the boominess (or bass) of a dreadnaught.
I picked up a Martin M-36 at Bananas at Large recently and was immediately taken by it. While the guitar doesn’t have the 1 3/4″ nut width of most fingerpicking guitars, the neck is Martin’s low profile neck - the one we here at Fretbase find most comfortable. Most importantly, the guitar played like a dream. We tried out a few fingerpicking numbers including a few by Mississippi John Hurt and were impressed.

We have never been afraid to admit that we are big fans of Martin Guitars. Heck, between the two of us we own 4 of them (and we’re still working on expanding the collection). So when the company announced that it was releasing 13 new models at the Summer NAMM show, we knew we had to work fast to get them onto Fretbase. And so we did. We’re probably most excited by the new Martin D-16 Adirondack (shown at left). Lately we’re drawn to mahogany bodies and there is something about the color of Adirondack Spruce offered at a reasonable price that just gets us salivating. And of course the Martin D Flamed Mahogany is just plain good for dreaming. Read on for the full list of new Martin Models.

The twice annual NAMM show took place this weekend in Nashville, Tennessee and hear at Fretbase we’ll be working hard these next few weeks to get our loyal readers up to speed on the newest guitars and gear announced at the show. Of course, we’re big Martin Guitar fans here at Fretbase so we’ll start with a new Martin 12-string signature model. The Martin D12 David Crosby is an all solid spruce top, mahogany back and sides 12-string made the way David Crosby likes it. That means it has a long scale but only 12 frets. That also means that the top isn’t just any spruce. It is a Carpathian spruce. And the unique nature of the guitar doesn’t stop there. There is also Paua shell in the rosette.

The Martin D-1 acoustic guitar is back. But first, some history. In the 1990’s, the C.F. Martin Company had a 1-series of acoustic guitars. That series was designed for players that wanted a good sounding guitar but who couldn’t break the bank (in this case, the bank would break if more than $1,000 was taken out of it). The previous 1-series of acoustic guitars had a solid back and top, but laminate sides making it the not quite as attractive little sister to Martin’s solid acoustics. Not anymore. This month the company has reintroduced its 1-series with four new guitars and now that series is all-solid. Sure, the back and sides are made of sapele rather than mahogany but these are tough times so who cares? Full story…
