A Better All-In-One Guitar? MIT’s ‘Chameleon’ Guitar

We’ve all known that various tone woods are a huge aspect of a guitar’s overall tonal characteristic.  A cedar spruce top is known for it’s brighter and crisper sound while a spruce cedar top is a warmer and mellower-sounding tone wood.  But why have to choose just one, right?

Amit Zoran, a student at MIT’s Media Lab, has developed a new kind of guitar that has a removable soundboard.  By swapping in different kinds of soundboards made from different woods and bracing configurations, the guitar is better able to emulate the true acoustic quality of that particular tone wood.
