Some guitarists pick a brand of guitar and stick to it. Think of Johnny Cash and Neil Young and their Martin Guitars or Bruce Springsteen and his Fenders and Takamines. But there has always been something different about Dave Matthews and it extends to the way he moves between manufacturers of guitars.
In a 1999 interview with Acoustic Guitar Magazine, Matthews said his main axe while on tour with Tim Reynolds was a Martin HD-28. In fact, at one point Martin even released a Dave Matthews signature guitar. But now it appears something has happened.

While spending an inordinate amount of time on the Acoustic Guitar Forum this week (o.k., every week), we were struck by a question posted by a user on the best albums that feature a singer-songwriter on acoustic guitar. While some of the obvious choices were mentioned (is anybody surprised to see Eric Clapton Unplugged on the list?), there were a few choices that we didn’t expect. We were especially shocked by the album that got the most mentions. We like the one whose picture we chose for this story, but that one wasn’t the #1 choice. If you want to know which album was mentioned most often by guitarists in the forum, read on.

A little while ago (OK, a long while ago), Acoustic Guitar Magazine ran a story on the 100 Essential Acoustic Guitar CD’s. I came across the list again recently. Here are some of my favorites that made the Acoustic Guitar Magazine list. (Links take you to the MP3’s or CD’s on Amazon.)
I think it’s a good list but can’t understand for the life of me how it’s possible that not one Robert Johnson recording made the list (maybe RJ’s recordings weren’t out yet?). For the full list, check out the original story on the Acoustic Guitar Magazine website.

Which CD’s from the last 12 years do you think should be on this list? Let us know in the comments.

Quite a few guitarists are very devoted to their specific guitars. Sheryl Crow, for example, has a 1962 Gibson Country Western that she has played regularly for years. When she tours, she brings 10 or so of her Gibson Signature Model with her - which was modeled on her Country Western. As I mentioned in a previous article, Ray Lamontagne is pretty devoted to his Martin D-35. Other guitarists are very devoted to at least their brand if not a specific model. Lyle Lovett only plays Collings guitars. Johnny Cash was well known for his devotion to Martins.
But Dave Matthews takes a different approach.
