Downturn Guitar: Win a Guitar Giveaway

Wednesday, March 11th, 2009

Updated May 8, 2009: We have an updated list with new contests.  Go check them out now.

Lately we’ve been writing a series on the “Downturn Guitar” - economical guitars that are relatively comparable to the higher end instruments.  In these tough economic times we all have to make sacrifices and sometimes that new Martin or Gibson might have to be a new Blueridge or a new Epiphone.   But for some of us even buying any guitar might be out of the question. So what do we do when we can’t even spare a dime, brother?

We enter contests and try and win that guitar!   Full story…

With the Dow falling below 7,000 points yesterday, there has never been a better time to choose what we at Fretbase like to refer to as a “Downturn Guitar.”  A Downturn Guitar, as we have discussed before, is a guitar that is built with a similar shape and materials to a classic guitar.  Most importantly, a Downturn Guitar is also much cheaper usually because it is built by a less well-known manufacturer and built offshore in China or Korea.  A Downturn Guitar often won’t live up to the original, but it will come close at a fraction of the price.  Today, we are looking at a nice alternative to the all-time classic Gibson J-45, the slope-shouldered dreadnought which has been a favorite of artists from Bob Dylan to John HiattFull Story…

With more and more people flying their Hoover flags these days we could all look to save a dime or two.  As Dave mentioned, we’ve recently started a series called the “Downturn Guitar” in which we recommend a cheaper alternative to a more expensive guitar.

Let’s start by taking a look at the venerable blues-rock machine that is the Gibson ES-335.    Full Story…

Downturn Guitar: Blueridge BR-160

Friday, February 20th, 2009

With the Dow hitting new lows, it is time to look seriously at some less expensive guitar alternatives.  (Some would say it is a good time to hold off on buying a guitar altogether but we think that’s blasphemy.)   So today here at Fretbase we’re launching a new feature called “Downturn Guitar.”  In this feature, we’ll be recommending a less expensive alternative to a popular guitar.  Today, we’re going to start by taking a look at an all-time classic - the Martin D-28.

Full Story.
