Gibson has announced two new versions of the Angus Young SG. The first is from Gibson’s Custom Shop and comes in a custom-designed Angus Cherry finish - kind of dark cherry. The second version of the Angus Young SG is from their US shops and comes in a high-gloss ebony black finish.
You might remember Gibson’s original Angus Young SG featured a Maestro Lyre Vibrola tremolo engraved with lighting bolts and “Angus”. These updates don’t have the trem bar but they do feature some nice lighting bolt inlays in the fretboard.

Remember that game show from the ’70s called Name That Tune? No? Well it was a game show that was aired in the US starting way back in the 1950s and ran in different formats until the early 1980s. The game pitted two contestants against each other to name a song in as few notes as possible. Well we’re going to try it out but instead of a tune, we’re going to see if we can Name That Guitar!
We were contacted by Dave, a loyal Fretbase reader, who had a couple of pictures of a guitar but didn’t know the maker or model. No one at Fretbase knew either. So we’re asking everyone to take a look at the pictures and see if we can Name That Guitar!

Yamaha Guitars recently hit a milestone - 40 years of selling guitars in the United States. I’ve always argued that Guitar Hero is a tragic diversion for potential musicians who will never learn how to play an actual guitar. Worse, anyone playing Guitar Hero is not even responsible for making the music; they can only “hit” or “miss” the notes already laid out for them. The only way to remove a person any further from the process would be to handcuff them to a chair and blast an iPod Shuffle from across the room.
But Zivix’s Headliner electric guitar has just given me a glimmer of hope…

Eddie Van Halen ranks #70 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of all-time (see related story) and many, many people think he should be much higher. As the lead guitarist for Van Halen, Eddie Van Halen defined what it meant to be a 80’s rock band lead guitarist.
Earlier this week, Eddie Van Halen and Fender announced that he collaborated with Fender in the creation of the EVH Wolfgang electric guitar.
“A guitar is a very personal extension of the person playing it. You have to be emotionally and spiritually connected to your instrument. I could have just stayed at home and built this guitar for myself. I do this because a lot of people ask if they can get what I use. Well, yes you can and what you get is identical to what I use,” commented Eddie. “From the basics of the guitar to painstaking aspects like the binding and everything else–we re-did everything on this guitar.
