1959 Gibson Les Paul Still High Demand Vintage Guitar

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

gibson-les-paul-standardInspired in part by Michelle Obama’s gift earlier this year of a Gibson Hummingbird acoustic guitar to Carla Bruni-Sarkozi, the New York Times has an article today suggesting classic guitars as a good item to buy or give as a gift this holiday season (we should all have friends or family like this).  While the first lady gave Bruni-Sarkozy a new model Hummingbird, the article suggests that an original model from the 1960’s might have been a better choice.

According to a guitar-maker quoted in the story, “A Hummingbird from the 1960s would cost in the region of $6,000, about twice as much as the new model.  They are both great guitars, but for the extra money you get a level of craftsmanship in the vintage version that has been lost.”  Then, the author turns his attention to the guitar that continues to be far and away the most sought after vintage guitar.

Gibson SG Zoot Suit Unveiled

Tuesday, August 4th, 2009

gibson-sg-zoot-suit-uprightSome guitars have incredible substance and some just have incredible flash.  And despite what you might think, here at Fretbase we’re not all about substance.  And that’s why today we’re writing a feature story about the Gibson SG Zoot Suit.  How does it get that wild look you wonder.  We’re glad you asked.  The Gibson SG Zoot Suit features a brand new body built with multiple birch wood laminate pieces.  Each piece is approximately 3/4″ inch thick and each is dyed with a different color.  Each piece is then compressed and bonded together to form one solid block of wood.  The result is a pretty spectacular looking guitar - and it is available in 5 different colors - Rainbow, Black and Red, Black and White, Black and Natural, and Red and Blue.  The Gibson SG Zoot Suit also comes standard with two pickups - Gibson’s 496R and 500T.  If you want a Gibson SG that people will pay attention to, the Gibson SG Zoot Suit is it.  The Gibson SG Zoot Suit is available at many online guitar stores.

Bruce Springsteen’s Fender Esquire: Workhorse, Cover Model or Both?

Sunday, May 31st, 2009

From the beginning of Fretbase, we have been intrigued by artists’ signature guitars.  We’re not talking about the replicas that the artists help market as signature guitars.  We’re talking about the real deal.  The guitar that the artist returns to time and time again.  We mean Jimmy Page and his Gibson Les Paul or Johnny Cash and his Martin dreadnought.  So you can imagine how excited we were to read the recent story on the Gibson website about Bruce Springsteen’s Fender Esquire.  It was a great read in which we learned an awful lot about his guitar.  Read on for some of the highlights.

Prince Plays Fender Stratocaster on Tonight Show (with Video)

Monday, March 30th, 2009

While most people who think of Prince like to think of his singing and dancing, the guy plays a pretty mean electric guitar.  But as he gets older (he’s 51), Prince is shifting from his less conventional guitars like this one to something more standard.  Prince was on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno last week to promote the two CD’s of his music that he’s releasing through Target this week - LOtUSFLOW3R and MPLSoUND (don’t try to even say their names - much less say them five times fast).  Instead of playing one of his regular purple concoctions, this time Prince showed up playing a light blue Fender Stratocaster - still a little out there but definitely more conventional.  Click on to see the video.

Eddie Van Halen Talks Guitars

Thursday, February 5th, 2009

It isn’t just that we were (and maybe still are) crazy about his first wife, the bottom line is that Eddie Van Halen has always known how to rock.  Eddie is #70 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time and many feel he was robbed.  CNN recently caught up with Eddie to interview him about touring with David Lee Roth fronting the band again, about his guitar training and about the new EVH Wolfgang Guitar - which he made in cooperation with Fender.  The well-done interview even includes video.  See Video.

EVH Wolfgang Electric Guitar

EVH Wolfgang Electric Guitar

We wrote last month about the new Eddie Van Halen (EVH) “Wolfgang” signature model electric guitar.  Well, as of today it is available for pre-order.  The guitar was researched for 2 years and has been produced to Eddie Van Halen’s exact specifications with many of the features of his famous Wolfgang guitar.  We like that it comes in three color options:  black, white or sunburst (we’re partial to the sunburst) and that it has the endorsement of EVH himself.
