Here’s a couple of videos of Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck from the Madison Square Garden show in New York City on Feb 18th, 2010. Jeff Beck took the stage first and performed a set that featured songs off his upcoming April album. Clapton then followed with his own set that started off acoustic and then went electric and featured his classics. At the end of the show both players got on stage together to play. One song featured was Henry Mancini’s “Moon River”. Here’s a video of the band working on Moon River at sound check.

We noticed recently that guitarist Eric Clapton has announced the date and lineup of this year’s Crossroads Festival. It’s going to be in Chicago on June 26th and it’s unlikely we’ll be able to make the trip out there. Which then had us asking what other guitar related festivals are going down this year? We’ve done a little poking around and here’s a few we’ve found that might be in your neck of the woods. (more…)

Here’s a new way to show off your unending passion for guitars. Fender and T-Mobile announced a new limited edition version of the myTouch 3G phone with a sunburst finish. What’s great is after you drop your phone a few times, it becomes a relic’d version of the phone.
T-Mobile has signed up Eric Clapton to be the pitchman and they’re premiering on January 20th with Clapton in a commercial with the phone. We have to admit, it does have a nice flame on it.

In connection with the release of the new documentary It Might Get Loud, Time Magazine music critic Josh Tyrangiel has published a list of the 10 best electric guitar players. From our standpoint, the only thing this list stands out for is its lack of originality. Still, we’re darn excited about seeing It Might Get Loud so we’re still going to go ahead and publish the list. Read on for the entire list.

You know what it’s like. You are traveling on business. You decided to fly with only carry-on so that you could keep it light. It is you, some clothes and your razor. After a full day of really boring meetings you are getting awfully lonely. You miss her. You head into the hotel bar and order a drink and drown your sorrow in your pretzels. It doesn’t help. You miss her more than ever. You wonder why you took this job. You wonder why it makes you travel so much. You wonder when you’ll see her again.
You miss your guitar.
Sheila is her name (wait, that’s just me). You cry out to her. “Sheila, Sheila, Sheila. Why?” You feel worse.
Well, thanks to Guitar Affair, just because you don’t have Sheila doesn’t mean you have to be lonely. You can Love The One You’re With. Whole Story…

While spending an inordinate amount of time on the Acoustic Guitar Forum this week (o.k., every week), we were struck by a question posted by a user on the best albums that feature a singer-songwriter on acoustic guitar. While some of the obvious choices were mentioned (is anybody surprised to see Eric Clapton Unplugged on the list?), there were a few choices that we didn’t expect. We were especially shocked by the album that got the most mentions. We like the one whose picture we chose for this story, but that one wasn’t the #1 choice. If you want to know which album was mentioned most often by guitarists in the forum, read on.

With more and more people flying their Hoover flags these days we could all look to save a dime or two. As Dave mentioned, we’ve recently started a series called the “Downturn Guitar” in which we recommend a cheaper alternative to a more expensive guitar.
Let’s start by taking a look at the venerable blues-rock machine that is the Gibson ES-335. Full Story…

We’ll admit that this one looked even better in person. With a top of Solid Carpathian Spruce and back and sides of Solid Madagascar Rosewood, the new Eric Clapton signature model was really a stunner. As is the case with the 000-28EC, it has the shorter scale (24.9″) and wider nut (1 3/4″). Yes, that is the sunburst version of the same guitar on the left.

While Lil Wayne might be the best selling artist in the entire music business for 2008, Fretbase readers can be a little more particular. Put more specifically, we’re into guitarists and bands that feature guitarists. In 2008, some fantastic guitarists rose to the top of our artist list for the year including one unique redhead that sprung all the way to the top (although we’re confounded by Dweezil Zappa’s showing).
So, without further ado, here is the list of the Top 10 Artists on Fretbase for 2008 - our inaugural year - measured in terms of unique page views.

We’re writing to let you know about some big improvements on Fretbase.
In the beginning, we wanted to build a website and community for guitarists built on a database of important guitar-related info. In fact, the “base” in our name refers to that database. (And “Fret” refers to the frets in a guitar – not what our families have been doing since we started this venture.)
Today we launched the Fretbase database along with a number of other useful features. We’re fired up to tell you about them.
- Fretbase now has over 24,000 pages devoted to your favorite guitars, artists and songs. What this means is that you can now get detailed information and photos of the Gibson Les Paul and hundreds of other guitars. Or maybe you want more detailed information about the guitars and songs played by Eric Clapton. Fretbase has that too. Or perhaps you just want to see some bedroom rockstars play Stairway to Heaven. Check.
- The entire database was built on a wiki (user editable) platform. So if you notice a guitar, artist or song that is missing, you can add it to Fretbase in no time. It is O.K. if you don’t have all of the relevant info. Just add your item to Fretbase and our expert editors will do the rest.
- Fretbase now has tens of thousands of guitar tabs integrated into the site. If you are just looking for a good place to get tabs for the Beatles’ Blackbird, Fretbase is the place to go.
- As a consumer of guitar-related stuff, we wanted to make it easy for you to find the stuff you need. The site now has pages on great local retailers – like Gryphon Stringed Instruments in Palo Alto, links to latest promotions from online guitar stores (see the top right of our top page), and links to download the songs you are trying to play – like Sweet Home Alabama - from iTunes and Amazon.
- Most importantly, Fretbase has enabled comments and discussions on every guitar, artist and song on Fretbase. So if you want to talk to other people that have a Fender Stratocaster or if you want to get tips on how to play Hotel California, Fretbase is the place.
Most importantly, we want Fretbase to be useful for all guitarists. If you have feedback, we’re eager to get it. Just post in our comments.
