Brian and I get more excited about the Apple Tablet with each advancing day. And it isn’t just because of the possibility of of watching t.v. and reading the New York Times on the device. There are plenty of devices out there that would let us do that right now. What we’re really excited about is the potential to finally have a solution for keeping all of our guitar tablature handy. Last year, we wrote an article describing our hope that the Amazon Kindle would be the solution. But it wasn’t. Read on to see why not and why we think the Apple Tablet will be different.

Today TechCrunch published an excellent story suggesting that the new Lesson Store built into Apple’s GarageBand (which is part of iLife ‘09) could be the next big revolution in music. (We have shared our excitement about this product in a previous article.) As the article points out, the current solutions for getting tablature or sheet music aren’t that good (they are usually either illegal or overpriced - and in both cases pretty inaccurate). There is nothing we love more than guitars here at Fretbase. The only thing that comes close, however, is new technology. So this morning we’re riveted by the liveblogs of Apple’s keynote presentation at MacWorld. Little did we know how much our two worlds would collide.
During the presentation, Apple announced that in the newest version of GarageBand video guitar lessons would be made available for $4.99. And we’re not talking about guitar lessons from the guy who works in your local guitar store. We’re talking about lessons from major artists like Sting and John Fogerty.
In the words of the editors at Engadget, “My prediction: This feature alone is going to sell hundreds of thousands of Macintoshes.”

Recording music in your own home has never been easier. There are ton of tools, software and devices out there today that can help you set up a home recording studio at a fraction of the cost of hiring someone to do professional recording. That said, it can be a bit daunting at first for the beginner. What exactly does one need to start? Can I do it without spending a small fortune? How good will these recordings sound?
To help answer those questions, I’m going to run through my own home recording set up to give you an idea of what’s needed and how easily it can be done. All in I spent roughly $2270.00 to create my home studio - but that includes the $1700 I spent when I bought myself a new MacBook Black
computer, which I use for more than just home recording. If you take out the MacBook, it was roughly $570 for the mics, hard drive and audio interface. Part 1 in this series will be on Garageband. After that I’ll cover the audio interface, external hard drive and how to connect it all together.
