Gibson’s Ugly Guitars

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

ugly-men1Gibson has released some of the most beautiful, iconic guitars around.  The Gibson Les Paul Standard, the Gibson SG and Gibson Explorer are just a few examples of some of coolest looking guitars known to man.  But recently we think Gibson has released some very ugly looking guitars that I’d have a hard time shelling out Gibson prices for.

Everyone has hits and misses.  Check out these misses over the past couple of years coming from one of our favorite builders out of Nashville.

Gibson Introduces a New Angus Young SG

Monday, November 16th, 2009

picture-1Gibson has announced two new versions of the Angus Young SG.  The first is from Gibson’s Custom Shop and comes in a custom-designed Angus Cherry finish - kind of dark cherry.  The second version of the Angus Young SG is from their US shops and comes in a high-gloss ebony black finish.

You might remember Gibson’s original Angus Young SG featured a Maestro Lyre Vibrola tremolo engraved with lighting bolts and “Angus”.  These updates don’t have the trem bar but they do feature some nice lighting bolt inlays in the fretboard.

Gibson SG Zoot Suit Unveiled

Tuesday, August 4th, 2009

gibson-sg-zoot-suit-uprightSome guitars have incredible substance and some just have incredible flash.  And despite what you might think, here at Fretbase we’re not all about substance.  And that’s why today we’re writing a feature story about the Gibson SG Zoot Suit.  How does it get that wild look you wonder.  We’re glad you asked.  The Gibson SG Zoot Suit features a brand new body built with multiple birch wood laminate pieces.  Each piece is approximately 3/4″ inch thick and each is dyed with a different color.  Each piece is then compressed and bonded together to form one solid block of wood.  The result is a pretty spectacular looking guitar - and it is available in 5 different colors - Rainbow, Black and Red, Black and White, Black and Natural, and Red and Blue.  The Gibson SG Zoot Suit also comes standard with two pickups - Gibson’s 496R and 500T.  If you want a Gibson SG that people will pay attention to, the Gibson SG Zoot Suit is it.  The Gibson SG Zoot Suit is available at many online guitar stores.

Gibson’s New Raw Power Series

Monday, April 6th, 2009

Gibson has announced a new line up guitars called the Raw Power series this past week at the Musikmesse (Europe’s NAMM) in Frankfurt, Germany.  The Raw Power series are stripped down, no-frills versions of classic Gibson guitars that are priced a bit more affordable for the everyday working man.   The new series is launching with the Les Paul Studio Raw Power and the SG Raw Power.    If the name seems familiar it’s because Gibson had a Raw Power series for a short time from 2000 - 2001.  These guitars might be Gibson’s version of the “Downturn Guitar“, with bad economy likely hurting sales, producing more affordable guitars might be a strategy to boost sales.  Full story…

Real Models For Guitar Hero and Rock Band

Wednesday, December 10th, 2008

I know that when you first read the headline you were optimistic that this would be an article about Heidi Klum (see relevant video here), but I’m not talking about female models.  I’m talking about *guitar* models.

Inc. Magazine recently published an in-depth story of the making of Guitar Hero and Rock Band.  It is a great story about the long and winding road to creating the games that went on to gross billions (yes, billions) in sales.  But we’re not that into Guitar Hero and Rock Band.  We’re into real guitars.  The story identifies the real-life guitars used as models for Guitar Hero and Rock Band.  Do you know what they were?
