We were pretty excited earlier this year when Martin Guitar introduced the new Martin 000-15M all-solid mahogany acoustic guitar. Not only were we excited about the ability to get an all mahogany guitar again from Martin, but we were also impressed with all of the new appointments. But when we hear about a new guitar, the first thing we want to see is pictures. Martin posted a few on their site, but that wasn’t enough. We wanted more. And sometimes the answers to your dreams come from far away places.

We are unabashed fans of Johnny Cash’s American Recordings. The five albums that Johnny Cash recorded with Rick Rubin (and the 5 disc boxed set created in addition to that material) are considered by many to be the best recordings of Cash’s career. While the albums had some original material, it was Cash’s covers of some all time classic recordings that really got our attention. In particular, we love Cash’s versions of Neil Diamond’s Solitary Man and U2’s One. Read on for soundclips.

Like a lot of people, we were pretty disappointed last year when Martin Guitar stopped manufacturing the Martin 000-15s as a standard model. The all-mahogany (or sometimes sapele) slothead was a beauty that harkens back to an earlier time. Sure, we weren’t crazy about the tuning pegs or the decal rosette but for an all-mahogany (and sometimes sapele) small-bodied guitar from Martin, what could you expect for $1,249 street price? Yes, you can expect even more. (more…)

Sometimes something old seems like something new. At the Winter NAMM Show last week, Martin Guitar announced the release of 13 new guitars this winter. This year, we’d say the company had two primary areas of focus. The first is electrics. Even though Martin is known for their acoustic guitars, 8 out of the 13 guitars released were acoustic-electric models with built-in electronics. But we were most happy to see the two new M-models released - the Martin 000-15M and the Martin D-15M.

Some days it feels like the world is giving you lemons. But today, it feels like the world gave me lemonade. On Wednesday, January 13th, Elvis Costello will welcome Lyle Lovett, John Prine and Ray LaMontagne on this show Spectacle: Elvis Costello with… (yes, this could be the worst name ever for a show, but who cares when the musicians are this good?). The show promises an exploration of the role of the Singer/Songwriter. And who better than these three?

Often when a new guitar comes along we look at the specs and think, “That guitar looks pretty good, but we sure wish it had x.” (In case you haven’t noticed, we can be perfectionists about guitars here at Fretbase.) Not so with the Martin M-30 Jorma Kaukonen - and before this guitar came along we hadn’t even heard of Jorma Kaukonen!
According to Martin Guitar, the guitar is “a perfect guitar for acoustic fingerstyle blues.” As it so happens, I have been working on playing Mississippi John Hurt lately and after looking at the specs I think they’re right. Read more.

Some guitarists pick a brand of guitar and stick to it. Think of Johnny Cash and Neil Young and their Martin Guitars or Bruce Springsteen and his Fenders and Takamines. But there has always been something different about Dave Matthews and it extends to the way he moves between manufacturers of guitars.
In a 1999 interview with Acoustic Guitar Magazine, Matthews said his main axe while on tour with Tim Reynolds was a Martin HD-28. In fact, at one point Martin even released a Dave Matthews signature guitar. But now it appears something has happened.

The Martin M-36 represents an interesting variation for Martin Guitars. The guitar is an “M” sized guitar. For some reason (readers, help me out), “M” sized guitars are are the fourth in line when you go from smallest to largest from 0, 00, 000 and then M. The size is good for players who want to get the volume of a larger guitar but not the boominess (or bass) of a dreadnaught.
I picked up a Martin M-36 at Bananas at Large recently and was immediately taken by it. While the guitar doesn’t have the 1 3/4″ nut width of most fingerpicking guitars, the neck is Martin’s low profile neck - the one we here at Fretbase find most comfortable. Most importantly, the guitar played like a dream. We tried out a few fingerpicking numbers including a few by Mississippi John Hurt and were impressed.

We have never been afraid to admit that we are big fans of Martin Guitars. Heck, between the two of us we own 4 of them (and we’re still working on expanding the collection). So when the company announced that it was releasing 13 new models at the Summer NAMM show, we knew we had to work fast to get them onto Fretbase. And so we did. We’re probably most excited by the new Martin D-16 Adirondack (shown at left). Lately we’re drawn to mahogany bodies and there is something about the color of Adirondack Spruce offered at a reasonable price that just gets us salivating. And of course the Martin D Flamed Mahogany is just plain good for dreaming. Read on for the full list of new Martin Models.
