Paul Reed Smith has just announced a new amplifier called the PRS 30 Combo. The new amp features four of EL84 tubes with a control layout similar to PRS’s Dallas model that was announced a year ago at Winter NAMM 2009. The PRS 30 Combo has a 12” ET65 WGS speaker, reverb and a bright switch. PRS describes it’s tone as “an English sound with an American twist.”
“The PRS 30 Combo offers classic EL84 tones with some special tweaks to the EQ section that give it a character all of its own. All this in a compact but powerful package… the PRS 30 Combo excels at everything from Country to Classic Rock to Blues,” said PRS Amplifier Business Unit Manager Michael Clark.

Fender has lost an appeal with the United States Patent and Trademark Office after it attempted to trademark the body shapes of the Fender Stratocaster, Telecaster and Precision Bass guitars. Fender had targeted companies like U.S. Music Corp (Washburn, Parker), Warmoth (makes guitar bodies), Schecter, ESP, Peavey and a bunch of others to try and stop the usage of the guitar shapes. The court focused on the question of whether or not consumers view these guitar shapes indication of the source of the manufacturer of the guitar.
Apparently the litigation has been going on for the past 5 years and has generated over 20,000 pages of court documents. Full story…

Paul Reed Smith, one of the best known and well respected electric guitar manufacturers, entered the acoustic guitar market with two new models - the Angelus and the Tonare Grande at the Winter 2009 NAMM show. It’s without question that these are two beautifully designed, high quality guitars made from some of finest tone woods available. But the Angelus and Tonare Grande have a street price of about $5,250 and $7,460 respectively. So why did PRS decide to launch with two guitars that are priced well out the reach of most guitarists? Paul Reed Smith has recently introduced a new guitar to their lineup called PRS Starla. The single cutaway Starla is a pretty retro looking guitar for PRS and features a B5 Bigsby tremolo and a Tune-O-Matic bridge. The pickups also have that retro look with double screw alnico humbuckers. Starla has a solid mahogany body and neck with a rosewood fretboard and 22 wide fat frets. The scale length is 24 1/2″ and it comes in vintage mahogany, vintage cherry, orange and black finishes. Prices seem to range from $1740 up to $2300 but it doesn’t look very many retailers have it in stock yet.
Also you’re supposed to pronounce the name “Starla” as if you were Cletus from the Simpsons.
