Exclusive: A Look Inside VHT’s New Special 6

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010

We had the chance to visit VHT headquarters and meet head amp designer Terry Buddingh last week and take a closer look at the new VHT Special 6 series amps.  If you’re not already in the know, the new Special 6 amps are handwired point-to-point amps that will retail for under $200 USD.  Not only do these amps deliver some killer blackface and tweed tones but they make a great platform for amp mods – something we think will be big with this amplifier.

We all know that tube amps can be expensive.  When you start talking about hand-wired tube amps, then you really are talking some bucks.  But VHT is looking to change all of that with their new Special 6 series which offers a hand-wired 6-watt combo for just under $200 USD.  We first noticed this new series back in December of last year but it looks like these amps are now available to the public.

Monday, December 7th, 2009

special-6_group-shot1VHT Amps has released a new set of amps called The Special featuring 6-watts of hand-wired goodness in a combo with a minimum advertised price of $199.99 USD.  Yes you read that right – a hand-wired 6-watt, tube-driven combo for less than $200 bucks.  They also offer the VHT Special 6 in head and cab version as well with the head at $179.99 and the cabinet at $149.99.

The Special 6 also features a High/Low power switch that enhances low-volume tones with extra-smooth richness (when in half-power mode). It’s a great feature for recording, or for low-volume “bedroom” players. In high-power mode, it’s one of the few amps in its class that is loud enough to compete with a strong drummer.

Interview with VHT Amplifiers

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

vhtI had the distinct pleasure of getting a behind-the-scenes look at how the folks at VHT Amplifiers build some of the best priced, best sounding point-to-point, hand wired amplifiers on the market today.  For those of you not familiar with VHT the name has been around for almost 20 years.  VHT has three main lines of amplifiers – the “Classic Series“, the “Lead Series” and the “Standard Series“.  The “Standard Series” are their hand wired amplifiers that are assembled in Brisbane, CA just south of San Francisco, CA.  We’ve written about VHT amplifiers before both here and here and at the risk of sounding like fanboys, after getting a chance to hear these amps in person only served to solidify our opinion that these are great sounding tone machines at some of the best prices available for hand wired amps.

VHT Amplification has introduced the first handwired amplifier from “The Standard Series,” The Standard 12.   The Standard 12 amplifier is built at the VHT workshop just outside of San Francisco and put through a careful testing and burn-in process to ensure top notch quality.  The Standard 12 uses 2x12AX7 tubes on the preamp side and 2x6v6 tubes for the power amp along with a 5Y3GT rectifier tube.  This configuration voices the amp very similar to the classic tweed 12 Watt Fender Deluxe amp of the mid to late 1950s.  Full story…
