Description: Gibson Hummingbird Modern ClassicEDIT

Gibson introduced the Hummingbird in 1960 as their first square-shouldered dreadnought. Today, it is a part of their “Modern Classics” line and is referred to as the Hummingbird Modern Classic. The guitar sports a mahogany back/sides/neck, spruce top, a bound Rosewood fingerboard and Rosewood Bridge. Its decorative pickguard, double parallelogram mother of pearl fingerboard inlays and signature heritage cherry sunburst finish are eye-catchers. The Modern Classic comes stock with high quality tuners, bone nut and Tusq saddle, Fishman electronics, and a premium hardshell case. Acoustic Guitar magazine gave it the 2000 Player’s Choice award under the dreadnought category. Thanks to a scale length of 24 ¾” (compared to a Martin dreadnought 25.4”), the Hummingbird feels looser and more “woody” sounding in your hands. But it’s also an opportunity to increase the gauge of strings for a bigger sound. The 14th fret meets body for easier access to those higher frets (without the cutaway). Jimmy Page, Keith Richards, the Beatles, Marc Bolan (T Rex), and Sheryl Crow have all used the Hummingbird.

  • Experience: I own it
